In response to historically underserved adults with developmental disabilities in Douglas County, a new initiative was born in 2021. Recognizing the limited offerings of programs like Special Olympics and Aktion Club, a vision for an art class emerged. Initially proposed in spring of 2021, local artists acknowledged the need but were unable to commit to teaching. The breakthrough came through collaboration with Arts for All Nevada (AfAN) based in Reno, known for their ongoing support through weekly classes for adults with developmental disabilities in Reno and Sparks.
AfAN eagerly agreed to sponsor the program, providing essential materials and securing a qualified instructor. After a year-long search, a dedicated local special education teacher was hired. With organizational support from the Carson Valley Arts Council (CVAC) and the Douglas County Community Center (DCCC) offering space, the inaugural class commenced on May 4, 2022, with an initial cohort of 8 participants.
AfAN continues to supply materials, and DCCC remains steadfast in offering space. This three-way partnership among AfAN, CVAC, and DCCC is fundamental to the ongoing success of the program, ensuring accessible and enriching artistic experiences for adults with developmental disabilities in Douglas County.
In response to growing community interest, a new initiative combining dance and ukulele instruction was introduced under the sponsorship of CVAC and with space provided by DCCC. The program began with a monthly dance class led by a local instructor who generously volunteered her time. The inaugural session on June 14, 2022, welcomed 9 participants, marking the start of a vibrant community endeavor.
Inspired by the positive response, the instructor expanded the program to include ukulele lessons starting from October 11, 2022. This expansion was made possible through the collection and refurbishment of donated instruments, with additional support from local musicians who assist during sessions. Participants now enjoy a dual-format class, beginning with ukulele instruction and culminating in dance, fostering a creative and inclusive environment for all involved.
The Bookmobile (BKM) stops at Douglas County Community Center (DCCC) on Fridays. A proposal was made to use visits on the BKM as a springboard for additional activities. A request was made to the Library Tech at Douglas County Public Library to accommodate a group from DCCC. The Library Tech agreed and suggested the possibility of bringing Library programs to DCCC during BKM visits. This idea was presented to the Library Director, who approved it. The Library sponsored the room at DCCC, and Library Fridays have been scheduled on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month since September 3, 2022.
Our 3-hour Friday Activities include everything from reading, writing, and puzzles to sports, gardening, art, and storytelling. We dive into life skills, motor skills, and more in a fun and dynamic environment. Plus, don’t miss our special First Friday Movie event each month, where we extend our session to 4 hours for a memorable movie experience. Every week offers something new!
After a year of planning and coordination, transportation services to and from activities at the DCCC have been successfully launched as of April 19, 2024. This initiative aims to support residents of Carson Valley by ensuring accessible transport options to community events and programs.
The service is made possible through the dedicated efforts of volunteer drivers, and the provision of buses by DART. This collaboration allows community members to conveniently participate in activities hosted at DCCC, promoting inclusivity and enhancing community engagement.
Our volunteer program has grown significantly since its inception, starting with a single volunteer at the first art class. Today, we are fortunate to have a dedicated team of ten volunteers who contribute regularly to our activities. These volunteers play integral roles in supporting our mission.
In addition to our core group, we are grateful for the support of drop-in helpers who generously contribute their time whenever possible. Together, our volunteers embody a spirit of community and service, enhancing the quality and reach of our programs for all participants.
